100 Famous Mountains of Japan
The “100 Famous Mountains”, also called “Hyakumeizan” (百名山) is a list of mountains across Japan established by a famous Alpinist and Author, Kyuya Fukada published in 1964. Although the author did not intend to list out the 100 BEST mountains of Japan, the Hyakumeizan has become a goal for a lot of hikers interested in the outdoors. Fukuda’s selection of these mountains is based on 3 criteria.
Criterion 1. Grace – it must feel like a beautiful mountain for a viewer
Criterion 2. History – the mountain must have an ancient history.
Criterion 3. Individuality – The mountain must have character and particularities (shapes & legends).
All the mountains must also be above 1,500m (with the exception of Tsukuba & Kaimon)
