Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage
Kumano Kodo is a series of ancient pilgrimage routes in the Kii Peninsula, located in the Nara, Wakayama, and Mie prefectures.
These pilgrimage routes have been used by pilgrims for more than 1,000 years for the purpose of visiting Kumano Sanzan, 熊野三山 – the Three Grand Shrines (Taisha) of Kumano
1. Kumano Hongu Taisha – this shrine is the head shrine of all Kumano shrines and holds a central place in Kumano worship.
2. Kumano Nachi Taisha – this shrine is known for its stunning Nachi Waterfall, Japan’s tallest waterfall
3. Kumano Hayatama Taisha – this shrine is associated with the sacred Kamikura Island and the Nagi no Eki Festival.
There are several routes within the Kumano Kodo pilgrimages. The most popular is the Nakahechi route.
The one I walked was the Kohechi route arriving in Hongu Taisha, and continuing to Nachi Taisha via the Nakahechi route.
Kohechi Route starts from the famous Mount Koya, the headquarters of the Shingon sect of Buddhism.
The Kumano Kodo was awarded a UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004, recognising its cultural and historical significance. The only two UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimages to this day are Kumano Kodo and the Camino de Santiago in Spain. You receive a dual pilgrim status and a badge if you have walked the two.
Kumano Kodo is a popular destination for both pilgrims and tourists interested in exploring Japan’s spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and traditional culture.
